Fine Art Constructed from Thousands of Sketches

Two of my favorite things in life, period. Doodles and Fine Art. Put them together and you have the work of Japanese artist Sagaki Keita.

According to FastCo Design; “The drawing is actually a mash-up of thousands of doodles–of giggling dogs and buxom bunnies and amorphous alien creatures–painstakingly rendered to capture the likeness of the Mona Lisa. It’s like a happy marriage of Leonardo da Vinci and James Thurber.

The artist, Tokyo-based Sagaki Keita, has done more than a dozen of these drawings, using pen and ink to refashion classical paintings and sculptures, from a bust of Hermes to Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, into elaborate ecosystems of loopy cartoon characters. A lot of the doodles are improvised, but that doesn’t mean Keita dashes this stuff off overnight. Images like the Mona Lisa, which stretches 2 feet by 1.5 feet (the approximate dimensions of the real thing), take about a month to complete, he tells Co.Design. Larger drawings, like a nearly 13-foot-long rendition of The Last Supper, can take up to 10 months.

Sheesh, that’s dedication. But it’s totally worth it. There’s something perversely satisfying in seeing classical art–art that represents the acme of cultural sophistication–reduced to farm animals and blob people.”

Similarities Between Hip Hop and Comic Books

Gotta love an attempt to blend the fictitious world of comic books with the sometimes equally made-up world of hip hop. As someone who adored hip hop and comic books in adolescence and looks back on both with equal amounts of nostalgia, I can appreciate the old comic strip aesthetic.

Also, is Kool Mo Dee the Wolverine of Hip Hop battles? He’s fought everyone.

Marvel and DC Superheroes Mutate into Lego Figurines

Star Wars Storyboard Illustrations

I have blogged about my love of Star Wars in the past, so when I came across this post on BitRebels featuring 34 pieces of storyboard art from the original three films, I had to post some of my favorite.

From BitRebels: “The one thing that triggered it this time was the awesome Star Wars illustrations by Ralph Mac Querrie. Not only are they inspirational and amazing, they also take you back to the days when the whole Star Wars franchise was still new and fresh. I am quite fond of those memories, and these images certainly bring it all back. If you’re not a hardcore Star Wars fan, you might not know that Mr. Querrie was the one who drew the original storyboard for the first Star Wars movies which landed George Lucas the budget to shoot the movies. Before he had a storyboard, he was met with utter rejection.”

Old Comic Book Images Transformed into a Music Video

From the palindromic Rats Live On No Evil Star comes Tree on the Green, an awesome music video created entirely from comic book images found online. The images were then animated in After Effects and edited into the finished product.
